Preparations underway to shift construction to southbound bridge over the Schuylkill
With rehabilitation finished on the northbound I-476/Blue Route Bridge over the Schuylkill River in Montgomery County, crews are working to shift construction activities to the southbound bridge in early 2010.
Workers have removed the construction barrier that has been in place since the start of work on the northbound bridge in early 2009. The barrier created a work area to allow the bridge to be rehabilitated a half-at-a-time while carrying two lanes of traffic.
As construction barrier was removed, minor deck repairs were completed and work is now underway to rebuild the northbound shoulder on both sides of the span. Traffic lines will then be painted to establish three northbound travel lanes on the right side of the bridge.
Work will then move to the crossovers on both sides of the bridge, which will be rebuilt to allow a single southbound “express lane” to be shifted to the northbound bridge prior to the start of work on the southbound bridge in January.
Following a break in construction during the year-end holidays, crews will return to place concrete barrier for the southbound “express lane” on the northbound bridge.
After the southbound “express lane” shift, construction barrier will be placed down the center of the southbound bridge, establishing a two-lane traffic pattern for southbound vehicles and a work zone that will allows reconstruction to begin on the outside half of the southbound structure.
Construction on the southbound bridge will be coordinated with a separate project to reconstruct the I-476/Blue Route Roadway beginning in early 2010. Go here for a status report on the roadway project.
