8/9/2009 Bridge Construction Update: August 2009

(Test message)

Half of Northbound Bridge Completed
Traffic shifted to rebuild side of Schuylkill River Span

Construction has wrapped up on the upstream half of the I-476/Blue Route Bridge over the Shuylkill River.

Two lanes of northbound traffic has been shifted to the rebuilt side of the bridge, vacating the downstream half of the span for construction crews to begin demolition of the remaining deck and parapets.

After removing the old concrete, crews will refurbish the deck's structural steel and rebuild the bridge's reinforced concrete deck. Construction will continue on the downstream side of the northbound bridge through November 2009.

Work to rebuild the southbound bridge will get underway next spring. The second span will be reconstructed using a similar staging process as is being used on the northbound bridge. That staging includes the use of an express lane traffic pattern that allows PennDOT to maintain three lanes of capacity in each direction during peak travel periods on the heavily used interstate.
